Wilderness Adventure (ages 8-11)
Deaf and hard of hearing children, ages 8-11, will have
the opportunity to get acquainted with the wilderness
through day hikes and overnight camping trips. The
camping experience and participation in the ropes
challenge course develops self-confidence and
self-esteem. Team building is also an important theme
throughout all the activities, which may include a
variety of art and pottery classes, evening programs,
nature studies, horseback riding and outdoor games and
activities.
Mountain Bound (ages 11-14)
The youth attending Mountain Bound tend to get their
first taste of the Rockies during this week long
program, although novelty is not a prerequisite. The AC
welcomes all deaf and hard of hearing youth ages 11-14
to join this particular adventure. After stimulating
personal growth through a variety of activities at the
camp like evening programs, art and nature studies,
photography classes, and rafting, the youth then have
the opportunity of challenging their own limits on a
guided backpacking trip in the mountains.
Peak Extreme (ages 14-18)
Teenagers attending this session will have the chance to
confront and overcome their self-imposed limits. After
engaging in a wide variety of fun activities like
rafting, swimming in hot springs, horseback riding and
art and nature studies, the group prepares for the AC
signature multi-day backpacking trip in the mountains.
The teens learn survival skills through experiential
education techniques such as orienteering (map and
compass reading), basic mountaineering using rock
climbing essentials, and personal safety (food and gear
storage). Reaching mountain passes over 12,000 feet with
spectacular views of the Elk Range is often the
highlight of this multi-day backpacking experience.
ABLE to Achieve (ages 14-18)
ABLE is the first of its
kind, another new AC exclusive. This program introduces
leadership tenets to High School Juniors and Seniors by
challenging them to plan and execute an overnight
wilderness expedition, calculate the logistics of a
whitewater trip, and orchestrate a mountain biking trip.
The use of extreme recreational activities is an AC
twist on experiential education. Participants will “take
away” valuable leadership skills applicable to all
facets of everyday life: in school, at home, even within
the community.
High Altitude Filmmaking (ages 12-18)
This is a new AC exclusive. High school teens with an
interest in filmmaking are invited to participate in
this week long session. Through practical, hands-on
educational techniques, teens will have the opportunity
to learn the entire filmmaking process from designing
scripts and sets to editing the final film project.
Recreational activities in the mountains will complement
the filmmaking sessions to create a balanced and
exciting program.
Wilderness Expedition (ages 14-18)
This week long session will be carried out entirely in
the wilderness. Campers should not expect to sleep on a
bed as they will be immediately immersed in the
wilderness for the entire week. Expect barriers to be
overcome, skills to be learned, and unknown abilities to
be surfaced. Survival skills will be taught, emphasized,
and practiced!!
KODA with special guest Bert Pickell (ages 8-18)
Children of deaf adults grow up in a unique environment,
which can sometimes raise particular challenges and
questions. The AC invites children of deaf adults to
participate in a week long program with their peers in
activities and excursions in the Rockies. The campers
will experience a wide range of mountain recreation
while engaging in panels and discussions on topics
unique to their experiences as a hearing child in a deaf
world.
