When you went through your childhood, you experienced many things that shaped who you are. They could be good, like celebrating moments with family and friends or when you won that race. They could be bad, like when you were picked on in school or when you broke your arm at the playground.
Like childhood, Deafhood refers to the experience a Deaf* person has.
The really neat thing is that being Deaf* definitely gives that person a unique perspective of the world. They see things in a different light. This means they might have a different solution to problems people may have never thought of before.
If you’re hearing, you can still benefit from Deafhood by engaging with the Deaf Community. Learn their language, engage their values, and you’re in for one of the most unique experiences of your life.
In fact, hearing students who use our campus for school field trips often comment that their perspective was positively influenced by their time at Aspen Camp. Its kind of like traveling to a new country, except- Deafhood is everywhere.
