On January 11, 2017, Dr. Lesa Thomas was humbled and excited to receive the award on behalf of the camp at the Winterskol Awards Dinner in Aspen. “We are honored and grateful for the nonprofit of the year recognition. It is particularly special as Aspen Camp is celebrating our 50th Anniversary this year,” the Executive Director said. “It is a validation of the hard work we’ve contributed as a community and how much of an impact we’ve made on the lives of Deaf* children.”
Amrin Shaikh, a thirteen-year-old camper from India who attended Aspen Camp last summer beamed as Dr. Thomas accepted the award. It was a meaningful moment for her, as the support of the local community was the reason she was able to have an unforgettable summer and a new start at life.
The staff of Aspen Camp was also elated to get this honor. Katie Murch, Marketing and Strategic Director, said, “I’ve always thought that Aspen Camp was the best place in the world since my years as a camper in the nineties. It is extremely touching to see that the locals agree.”
The awards were based on several merits, including a close partnership with the Roaring Fork Valley community as a means to achieve its mission. Notable community service events include Deaf Camp Benefit, Volunteer Weekend, sign language classes, interpreting services, hearing screening, and accessibility training. Aspen Camp is celebrated by over 5,000 alumni and countless volunteers and donors who believe in making a difference.
