Even though it was chilly in the valley, it was a hot weekend at Aspen Camp. Over thirty people came from the valley, Grand Junction, Denver, and Colorado Springs to partake in the Camp’s annual Volunteer Weekend.
Volunteer Weekend is the longest running volunteer program at Aspen Camp. Since the first, Aspen Camp has seen an increase in safety and aesthetics as well as a sense of community between its staff and locals. This weekend enables Aspen Camp to get ready for summer camp without increasing costs that will affect campers, of which about 70% come from low-income families.
This recent weekend focused more on fixing and improving things. This included clearing up debris and dead branches on trails from the recent snowmelt, fixing up a deck to ensure the safety and use of the art center, adding a back stair to the outdoor stage for a more grand entrance, as well as cleaning and organizing the activity rooms.
Dr. Lesa Thomas, Executive Director, shares her thought, “It’s always nice to have the camp spruced up and ready for the summer staff and kids’ arrival in June. The staff get a great first impression and then bring that quality in their efforts with the campers. It truly takes a village.”
The weekend also served as an unintended reunion, and a special one since it is Aspen Camp’s 50th Anniversary. Several camp alumni was shocked at seeing former camp friends they have not seen since the 80’s and 90’s, clearly marked by their posts on Facebook and the many selfies they took together. They were also surprised at how much the Camp had grown since then. Their only disappointment was the treehouse that no longer stood there, due to safety regulations.
This year’s volunteer weekend was made possible by Aspen Rent All and Sertoma Clubs from Colorado Springs and Denver. Harvey LeCato, the Vice President of Aspen Camp and the District Governor of Pikes Peak Sertoma, shares “It is so great to come to the Camp every spring and make tangible things happen here.”
In all, it was a very accomplished weekend. Locals who missed this weekend need not fret. There are more volunteer opportunities listed on our website including those at the annual Deaf Camp Benefit and the Open House.
